MARS, James (1790-1880). Life of James Mars, A Slave Born and Sold in Connecticut. Written by Himself. Hartford, CT: Press of Case, Lockwood & Company, 1867. 8vo (7 3/4 x 4 1/2 in.). Original printed wrappers, stitched. Some pages with penciled notations, including the name, "Crayton." Fourth edition. Accompanied by modern facsimile of the narrative.

Although born into slavery in Canaan, CT, the gradual emancipation law of Connecticut eventually allowed James Mars to gain his freedom. His autobiography, Life of James Mars: A Slave Born and Sold in Connecticut, was first published in 1864 and went through at least six editions.

Condition
MARS: Some wear throughout, with some small early repairs at the spine. Front cover partially separated. Chipping and some loss to edges, staining to covers and interior pages. Faint, early pencil name on front cover. JOHNSON: soiling, surface and edge wear to covers. Interior pages very good overall. Freeman's I Hindman strives to describe historic materials in a manner that is respectful to all communities, providing descriptive contexts for objects where possible. The nature of historical ephemera is such that some material may represent positions, language, values, and stereotypes that are not consistent with the current values and practices at Freeman's I Hindman.
