Original printed wrappers, stitched. Some pages with penciled notations, including the name, "Crayton." Fourth edition. Accompanied by modern facsimile of the narrative.
Although born into slavery in Canaan, CT, the gradual emancipation law of Connecticut eventually allowed James Mars to gain his freedom. His autobiography, Life of James Mars: A Slave Born and Sold in Connecticut, was first published in 1864 and went through at least six editions.
